If you’re in high school, there is only one thing on your mind right now: Prom! It’s one of the quintessential high school experiences that will stick with you for a lifetime. For most of us, it’s the first time you really get to dress up like a princess for a night. And because it is such a special night, it calls for a very special dress. 

Back when I was in school, gowns were the go-to dress of choice. (Let me tell you, gowns can get pretty pricey.) Thankfully, prom trends have broadened and shorter hemlines have been embraced.

It’s that time of year… festival season! Over the next few months, hipsters, trendsetters and music-lovers alike will be flocking to various music festivals all over the country. And as a matter of fact, I will be going to Coachella this year! I’m really excited. And to be honest, I cannot wait to dress up like a flower child for three days in a row... While I’m looking forward to the music, the number one thing on my mind right now is fashion. Or more accurately, what I am going to wear.

If you ask me, there are four major must-haves when packing for a fashionable festival getaway: shorts (short skirts can be dangerous), lightweight tops (it’s hot), comfortable (but stylish) footwear and a few breezy dresses. Seeing as my team has already shared their expert picks for festival flair, I thought I’d spotlight my wardrobe essentials for the big weekend…

Here at LaurenConrad.com we’ve got one very important thing on our mind lately: Coachella—or more importantly, festival fashion!

Between the warm weather, awesome tunes and (most importantly) the style spotting, we’re counting down the days until we get to drive our spray-tanned selves out to the desert for Coachella.

Whether you’re attending Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo or Mile High Music Fest, here are six stylish essentials that will keep you chic and happy this festival season:

1. The floppy hat. Wrinkles don’t look good on anyone. Protect your beautiful skin and keep it chic with a floppy hat like this yellow trimmed option.
2. Stylish sunnies. One of the biggest perks of daytime parties? Wearing your favorite sunglasses! These round-frame glasses by The Row have a subdued, retro vibe that we love.
3. Haute headbands. Unfortunately, high temps mean there’s a high chance you’ll be sweating (we prefer the term “glistening”). Combat excess glimmer by keeping your hair off your face with a cute headband like this coral flower headband by Dorothy Perkins. 
4. H2O. It’s important to hit the (water) bottle as much as possible when you’re hanging in the sun all day. This cute Bobble bottle is the perfect way to stay hydrated in style. 
5. Booties. We’re not ones to advocate practicality that often, but comfortable footwear at festivals is seriously necessary. No ifs, ands or buts about it. Keep the sludge off your toes with booties, like this versatile pair. 
6. Crossbody bag. You’ll need full dancing abilities so don’t even think about lugging a cumbersome shoulder bag around the festival grounds. A crossbody bag or backpack is a must. If you ask us, we like this coral crossbody from Topshop.

You can't really think of Spring without thinking of florals — and in addition to wearing the print on dresses and tops, we're loving the way it looks in a pant too. We saw the look on the Spring runways from designers like Vivienne Tam, Peter Som, Richard Chai Love, and more — and it might just be one of our favorite combinations for the coming season. The look just screams Spring, and although it isn't for the sartorially timid, it's a fun, fresh way to wear prints. If you're feeling fearful about how to pull it off, there are a few tips to keep in mind:

• The best way to try the look is in a style that you would wear otherwise. If you're a denim enthusiast, there are a ton of floral-print jeans on the market, from Paige Denim, 7 For All Mankind, and Current/Elliott. If you're more of a trouser girl, opt for some of the awesome picks from ASOS and J.Crew.
• Ease into it by keeping things solid up top. You'll look totally chic (not to mention effortless) if you pair your florals with a solid tee and heels — and go easy on the accessories!
• Think about your body. If you're petite, you'll want to go with a smaller pattern; if you're tall, you can get away with a bolder, large-scale design. Either way, pick a color combo that can easily blend into your current wardrobe.

Edge it up...
Floral pants don't have to be all sweetness and frou-frou; you can edge them up with a cheeky tee, printed heels, and a tough-girl spike necklace. Extra points if you throw on a leather jacket.

Aside from the fact that my birthday is fast approaching, I was actually inspired to put together this post after seeing a thread in the Forum started by member Alexie Kim, called Birthday Outfits. To be honest, what you wear on your birthday really depends on what you’re doing. If it is something casual, obviously dress accordingly. However, if you’re going to be the belle of the ball at a party, I think a chic LBD is the way to go.

I may be biased, but I think the Angelica Dress from the Paper Crown Spring 2012 collection (see above photo) would be perfect for an evening birthday fete. It’s simple and elegant but still fun, flirty and a little bit sexy too. Nevertheless, any LBD will do though!

Give your LBD a birthday twist by layering on a few crystal bib necklaces. It’s okay if they don’t match—just as long as they look good together. Personally, I think the layered look is gorgeous. Plus it adds the perfect touch of festive glamour.

My birthday is right around the corner… My plans are still a bit up in the air, but regardless of what they are, I plan to dress up and enjoy the night! Who knows…you might even see me wearing my LBD.

Needless to say, your birthday is a fabulous excuse to stand out. Since fashion is not for the faint of heart, take a risk and go for all white or wear a bright color that you otherwise would shy away from. Here are a few ideas:
