Primped: My Tips for Skirt-Ready Legs

With warmer temps in full swing and shorter hemlines on the horizon, here are a few of my personal tips for getting your stems spring and summer ready...

  1. Exfoliate, exfoliate! I recommend Fresh’s Brown Sugar Body Polish or making your own. A great scrub will slough away dead skin cells, leaving your legs polished and primed for increased moisturizer absorption. To make your own, simply mix together olive oil and sea salt with a squeeze of lemon juice until it's a thick paste.
  2. Moisturize. Twice a day—once in the morning (after you shower) and once at night before bed.
  3. Be mindful. Especially with what you put in your body! Before a big event and during the summer season I aim to really cut down my intake of salt and refined sugars. Staying hydrated is also really important if you want to reduce bloating and water retention.
  4. Lunge, lift and squat. To keep your legs lovely year round, get in the habit of squeezing in a few sets of lunges, leg lifts and squats every day. This will totally pay off come summertime.
  5. Keep it tan. Nothing slims your legs like a great tan! My favorite sunless tanner is by Kate Somerville, but I hear L'Oreal has great options too.

Speaking of sunless tanners, what's your go-to sunless tanning product?

My go to sunless tanner is with out a doubt Sun. I think thats what it's called.

I have been using it for little off a month. It smells great and doesn't streak or come off while you sleep. That was one of my biggest problems. I also love Katie's Towelettes as well.

These are great tips! I'm pretty fair skin with a blue undertone. If there are any ladies who are similar skin type and have found a great product (that doesn't make them orange!) please, please let me know. :)

My skin lol since I'm African American, but I do like to lay in the sun a little bit just to get my skin clear and a little glow to it.

im indian so i already have brown skin, but i love getting a more natural looking tan! i love this suggestion for more toned legs, i already see a difference!

I really love the exfoliating idea, i think i will experiment with sugar instead of salt.

Chic Peek: My BEAUTY Book Cover

What do you think?

I cannot begin to tell you how thrilled I am about this book. Although it was truly a labor of love, it was well worth the hard work. My number one goal when putting Lauren Conrad BEAUTY together was to make it your go-to guide for all things beauty. This book is an opportunity for me to pass on all the things I've learned along the way (and share some of my missteps). In the book you will find everything from my favorite beauty tips and tricks to step-by-step tutorials and more. I hope you guys enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Lauren Conrad BEAUTY will hit stores in the on October 16th of this year, which happens to be the same release date as my next book in The Fame Game trilogy, Starstruck!

Let me know what you think about the cover in the comments below.

peachy lips

Beauty Note: Peachy Keen

Pastels are having a very fashionable moment this spring, and beauty is no exception to the trend. Peachy pouts and cheeks were all over the Spring 2012 runways with designers like Phillip Lim, Carolina Herrera and Marc Jacobs embracing the feminine and subtle look.

Pretty peach makeup is perfect for sunny spring days and it’s subdued enough for the office or classroom. To test the trend try a creamy, peach blush such as NARS’ Orgasm blush (What a name, right?) or a fresh lip-gloss like Stila’s Peach Lip Glaze. Peach nails are also a great way to go for a pop of flirty color. Personally, I like Essie’s A Crewed Interest. It’s a luminous shade of peach that’s as pretty as it is on-trend.

Peachy makeup is a great look to try if you like to keep your beauty routine minimal or tend to err on the side of subtle, rather than bold. Pair your peach blush or lip with dewy foundation and a sweep of mascara for a perfectly flirty yet feminine finish.

Are you feeling peachy keen this spring?

opi nail polish

Lately I’ve been wearing OPI “Thanks A Windmillion” nail polish. The shade is from OPI’s Spring/Summer 2012 Holland Collection and I can’t seem to get enough of it. The polish is a lovely, creamy sea green. The delicate hue is perfect because it compliments all of the neutrals and pastels that have recently overtaken my wardrobe. But the thing I like most about this polish is that after just two coats, the color looks just as it does in the bottle. (Don’t you love that?)

Here’s a snapshot of the polish on my nails:

I have always been a fan of Kate Somerville’s products so it’s no surprise that my favorite sunless tanner is Somerville 360 Tanning Towelettes... Somerville 360 Tanning Towelettes

Giveaway: My Favorite Sunless Tanner

Each towelette is paraben-free and has a really nice self-tanning formula that leaves my skin with a lovely sun kissed glow. Surprisingly, the towelettes make application quick and easy. The tan typically takes a couple hours to develop and I have yet to have any serious mishaps with streaks. As long as you wipe the towelette over the entire surface of your skin, you are good to go!

Somerville 360 Face Self Tanning Pads

Giveaway: My Favorite Sunless Tanner

Just as body lotions are formulated slightly differently than face lotions, sunless tanners vary as well. That’s why I’ve started using Kate Somerville Self Tanning Face Pads. The pads have built-in exfoliators to ensure streak-free coverage and peptides that smooth out the surface of your skin. I absolutely love them!

Typically, I use the body and face tanners once a week depending on my weekend plans. If I want to be extra tan for an event, I’ll apply a second layer the night before. Using the towelettes and face pads have just become part of my weekly beauty routine now that my days of lounging poolside and tanning are long gone...

Both the face and body Somerville 360 products are must-haves for me. Especially as hemlines rise and bikinis become more and more of a reality as summer nears. Since I know many of you are getting ready for warmer temps as well, I thought it would be fun to do a giveaway!

Do you want to win a pack of Kate Somerville 360 Tanning Towelettes + Face Self Tanning Pads?

Every girl has a few tried and true items she must have with her at all times. No questions asked. If you were to take a peek into my bag, these are the three things you’d find:

  1. Lip balm. I might be addicted…or is that an old wives’ tale? (More on this later.)
  2. Red lipstick. You never know where the day will take you! (Click here for more about my favorite lip products.)
  3. Loose face powder. It’s the worst when you need it and don’t have it.

What three things do you keep on-hand at all times?

Word to the wise: wrinkles are inevitable (sorry ladies, I only speak the truth). Whether we like it or not, they are a part of life. Needless to say, there are many simple tricks you can work into your everyday routine to keep them at bay.

Here are my top ten tips for not looking like this:

  1. Don’t be a straw dog. Try not to use straws (and definitely do not smoke). Pursing your lips constantly will cause micro lines to become serious crevices. No thank you.
  2. Sleep smart. Believe it or not, there is a right way and a wrong way to sleep (in terms of positioning at least). The wrong way: sleeping on your face or side. The right way: sleeping on your back (even the American Academy of Dermatology recommends this).
  3. Slather the SPF. No surprises here: SPF is a must if you want smooth, youthful looking skin. While a tan might look good now, don’t forget who you will look like later…this! (Click here to learn about what ingredients I recommend looking for when buying sunscreen.)
  4. Moisturize. Prevent cracks and keep your skin soft and supple by moisturizing your face (and body) twice a day.
  5. Sleep clean. Always, always wash your face before bed. I cannot stress this enough. Never, ever sleep with makeup on.
  6. Wear your sunnies! Not only are sunglasses a great style staple, they also protect the delicate skin around your eyes from harsh UV rays. Just make sure you buy sunnies that are polarized to ensure maximum protection. And the bigger, the better! (I definitely just gave you a wonderful excuse to go buy a new pair of sunglasses. So use it! Click here to check out my favorite sunnies.)
  7. Take your vitamins. Take a multi-vitamin every day and make sure you’re getting enough omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E.
  8. Eat right. You are what you eat so be sure to make your diet vibrant and full of color. Do this by consuming plenty of fruits and vegetables everyday. This will keep your skin firm, hydrated and happy.
  9. Drink up. You’re only 8 glasses away from happy skin…don’t forget your h2-ohhhs.
  10. Smile! While science has yet to prove the direct link between wrinkles and stress, based on my experience the evidence is pretty clear. Stress manifests itself externally (and from what I’ve seen, wrinkles are a common symptom). Take a deep breath, exhale and smile!

That said, if you already have wrinkles—wear them proudly! I have little smile wrinkles. Most women my age would freak out, but to be honest, I kind of like them. As Lauren Hutton once said, “We have to be able to grow up. Our wrinkles are our medals of the passage of life.” Couldn’t have said it better myself…but it can’t hurt to make those “medals” a little less obvious before you join the half-century club. Right?

Is there an old beauty wives’ tale you’d like demystified? Let me know in the comments below.

Get Gorgeous: Say Yes to Winer SPF

Its no secret SPF is essential during the summer months. But did you know it's equally important during the wintertime? Oh, what’s that? You work inside all day so you don't need sunscreen? Not so fast…it’s important for you too!

UV rays are just as harmful during the winter as they are in the summertime—even if you spend your days working indoors, hidden from the sunshine. UVA rays penetrate window glass, which means you are exposed during your commute and if your office is filled with natural light. UV rays are especially harmful in snowy conditions since rays are strengthened due to the reflective nature of snow. The same goes for cloudy days. So lather up ladies!

All of these forms of exposure contribute to something called “photoaging.” Photoaging is a process of aging caused by UVA and UVB exposure. Major symptoms of photoaging include spider veins on the face or neck, loss of color and fullness in lips and wrinkle formations on the face, neck, ears, hands or chest. No thank you! (Note: You may want to think twice about those hands on the sunny steering wheel too because hands and necks show the symptoms of photoaging the most.) Since even the slightest bits of exposure add up quickly, it’s important to protect any uncovered skin with a broad spectrum UVA and UVB lotion with a minimum SPF of 15.

I use SPF 40 every morning (I use Josie Maran Protect Daily SPF 40+). I apply it to my face, neck and hands. If you’re looking for a quality SPF, I suggest buying something with one or more of the following ingredients:

  • B3: It aids in skin renewal and helps to improve your skins natural moisture barrier.
  • Lycopene: Helps improve your skin’s “natural protection against ultraviolet radiation.”
  • Hyaluronic Acid: Restores water content, elasticity and firmness to your skin.
  • Vitamin C: This antioxidant helps reduce the appearance of sun damage and increases skin’s moisture.
  • Katafray Bark: This ingredient is full of natural moisturizing properties.
  • Argan Oil: Repairs sun damage and keeps skin looking radiant and smooth.

What’s your favorite SPF?

One of our biggest inspirations here at LaurenConrad.com is you! So you can imagine how excited we were when we laid eyes upon Holly’s super chic, solo sparkle manicure. Let’s just say it was love at first click! That's why Holly is our first official Chic of the Week! Each week we will select one ambitious, stylish, amazing member from our community to spotlight in the Chic of the Week banner on our homepage. Fun, right?

We love how Holly transformed a simple manicure into a serious statement. The unexpected sparkle adds a perfectly understated flair that’s sure to spice up any ensemble.

After a not-so-in-depth beauty investigation, we figured out two ways you can achieve this look: First, you can use a highly concentrated glitter polish on one nail (the obvious method). Or, if you want to get crafty, apply one coat of clear polish and then sprinkle some craft-grade glitter over it and finally seal it off with a layer of topcoat. Easy as pie. And chic as ever!

What do you think about Holly’s manicure? Are you going to give it a try?

If you do give it a shot, snap a photo and upload it to your profile page. Don't forget to click "Submit this photo" for a chance to be featured in the Primp Gallery! (Click here to learn how to use the Gallery.)

Nail Files: Be Bon Voyage Ready

I’ve had my fair share of trips and travels during which I’ve been stranded with chipped nails and peeling polish. Chipping a nail on day two of a seven-day vacay can really put a damper on your mani-morale. To avoid said situations, I always travel with a few pre-packaged nail polish remover wipes and a box of Sally Hansen Nail Polish Strips. The strips are easy to apply, require zero dry time and you don’t have to stress over the polish bottle breaking or spilling in your bag. Personally I have found that the sparkly strips are especially chip resistant (I prefer the gold).

Have you tried Sally Hansen Nail Polish Strips?
