I am so grateful I joined this site, as I don't think I would have been motivated to pick up The Hunger Games. I am now in the middle of the third book. The parallel to the Occupy Protests are quite loud. I wonder if Lauren will pick #2 & #3, for the book-club,as they might be rather controversial. I feel that discussions are important, but can lead into dangerous and unhealthy ground via the internet. But it is important to face what is going on in our world, but I love how positive laurenconrad.com is, What do you think?

I just finished the series and can't wait for the movie but more so the nail polish collectionsmiley-smile.gif

When will the next book be selected?  I'm just through the first part of the second book in the series for Hunger Games - I wanted to know right away what happened once Kat and Peeta stepped off the train and what their lives were going to be like.

"Standby Chicago" by Rich Walls.  Such a great read. Check it out on Amazon, it's gotten some other great reviews as well.

The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides, author of The Virgin Diaries and Middlesex. Beautifully wrtten, captivating and 3-Dimensional characters. Overall a great read!

Unbinding the Heart: A Dose of Greek Wisdom, Generosity, and Unconditional Love Agapi Stassinopoulos

Gotta read Confessions of a Shopalholic series they are hilarious, witty and what every girl needs to be reading  xx ;)

Book Club: The Hunger Games Q&A

How does everyone like The Hunger Games so far? I have to admit that I’ve been so enthralled I already read past Part 1! I suppose it’s safe to say it’s a real page-tuner. Nevertheless, today’s Book Club Q&A will focus on Part 1 of the book.

Here are a few reading questions for you to answer. These questions only cover Part 1 of the book, so if you’ve read beyond Part 1, please be sure to mark comments that might spoil the book for others with “SPOILER ALERT.”

Questions

  1. Who is your favorite character so far?
  2. Why do you think Katniss holds so much resentment towards her mother?
  3. Do you think Peeta is really friend or foe to Katniss?

My Answers

  1. My favorite character is Katniss (I’m sure that is the popular answer). I like that while she is a guarded person, as the reader we are allowed a unique view into her thoughts.
  2. I think Katniss resented her mother because she has been forced to take over her role as care taker. Her mother seems emotionally unstable and unable to care for her children while Katniss is much more logical and isn’t controlled by her emotions.
  3. I think whether Peeta is a friend or foe is unclear at this point. The story from their past where he gives Katniss the bread indicated that he is a kind person so I want to believe he is a friend. However, the circumstances are difficult and might change their relationship.

Leave your answers in the comments below!

Also, our Live Book Chat will be on December 19th at 4pm PST, so mark your calendar and be sure to finish reading the book by then! During my Book Chat you will have the opportunity to talk directly with me about the book. It's very fun! I’ll provide more details soon.

XO Lauren

The Help Q&A

I have a confession: I already finished the book! I just couldn’t stop. Once I got to chapter 17 of The Help, I had to keep reading! Needless to say, today’s Book Club Q&A will focus on the first half of the novel. We will cover the other half during our Live Book Chat on October 6th at 4pm PST.

Below, I have listed a few reading questions for you to answer regarding The Help. Again, these questions cover the first 17 chapters of the book. If you have read beyond these pages (like me), please be courteous to our fellow Book Club members and label any comments that might spoil the book for others with “SPOILER ALERT” at the beginning.

Questions

  1. Which narrator do you resonate with the best?
  2. Life has changed dramatically since the times in which this book is set. What part of 1960s life in Mississippi do you find most shocking?
  3. Do you think personality is shaped by the times in which a person lives?

Here are my answers…

  1. I personally related most to Skeeter. Both her personality and appearance make her so endearing to me. I also liked watching her grow as a person throughout this book.
  2. The part of the book that affected me the most was when Skeeter was in the library and finds the book of Jim Crow laws. I actually began crying while reading this chapter (which was a little embarrassing considering I was on vacation by a pool...). The idea that not too long ago this was considered acceptable treatment towards others is so unimaginable to me.
  3. I think that views and opinions are influenced by your surroundings, but I don't think they define the person you are. Skeeter is a perfect example of this. She refused to accept what was perfectly acceptable to everyone else around her because she believed it was wrong.

Now it’s your turn to answer the 3 questions above in the comments below!

Our Live Book Chat will be on October 6th at 4pm PST, so mark your calendar. I'll fill you in on all the details soon!

Just be sure to finish reading the book in time for our chat!
